It’s less than a month to the Fourth of July. Can you believe it? Do you have patriotic decorations ready? Honestly, I don’t. I’ve just gotten started. I’ve got a couple of projects in the works, and the one that I’m sharing today is my first completed patriotic craft of the season. Of course, it’s a wreath because as Mellow Man tells everyone– we may not be completely decorated around here, but we have a wreath for every holiday! For this Fourth of July, I made a wreath with chevron burlap ribbon and felt pinwheels. It was a quick and easy way to add to my holiday wreath collection, and I’m delighted with how it turned out. I think I need to make a few more pinwheels for decorations, but I’m really enjoying my Patriotic Pinwheel Wreath.
I purchased the red chevron burlap ribbon at Pick Your Plum, and I used it to wrap a Styrofoam wreath form, securing it with straight pins. I use the smallest pins, and pin the back around the edges of the ribbon, so that the pins are barely visible.
The next step was to make the pinwheels. I used stiffened felt that is available for approximately $1 at any local craft store. I wanted something that was going to maintain the sharp points of the pinwheel, so I felt the stiffened felt would work better than regular craft felt.
I started by cutting a square of stiffened felt. The stiffened felt helps the lines look crisp and the pinwheel look good. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but try to cut as close to a square a possible. I made two 3-inch squares and one 5-inch square for this project. After I cut the square out, I drew two diagonal lines across the square. I then cut towards the center, stopping 1/4″ to 1/2″ from the center point.
I folded the left-hand side of the cut to the center point, and secured them all in place with a glue dot. Once the four pieces were attached to the center, I used a red, adhesive, scrapbooking embellishment in the center to cover up the glue dots. Then I simply played with the 3 pinwheels until I positioned them in a way that was pleasing to me, and I attached them to the wreath with my hot glue gun.
That’s it! The project was so fast and fun. I love it when I can make a craft in under an hour. There is such a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when I do that! How about you?
